Do you believe in fairies? I know I used to…
Watching ‘Fairy Tale: A True Story’ as a child, I thought it was a documentary, as serious and objective as any of Louis Theroux’s ‘Weird Weekends’. Some years down the line, I’m marginally less assured of its factual veracity (my fake news senses are tingling), but equally in love with it.
It tells the story of BBFs Frances and Elsie, two girls living their absolute best lives in idyllic countryside, feat. tragic overtones courtesy of World War One.
Luckily, amidst the doom and gloom, the girls manage to take some snaps (no filter, I hasten to add) of magical creatures, giving everyone something to believe in.
Now a nostalgic classic, the film was released over twenty years ago. Before I have too much time to think about that and how old it makes me feel, let’s find out what the cast have been up to since…
1. Florence Hoath: they grow up so fast
Starlet Florence Hoath, who played lead role Elsie, was just thirteen when the film was released.
Elsie serving us some full fringe realness
Despite this, by the time Fairytale came out she has already featured in Henry James’ creepy ghost story ‘The Turn of The Screw’.

Florence’s flair for the supernatural was evident from the start of her career, as she also popped up in ‘The Demon Headmaster’ on CBBC in 1996.
Only nineties and noughties kids will remember the abject terror of ‘The Demon Headmaster’, even if he was a certified silver fox
She continued her scary streak in 2005, when she appeared as Nancy in two episodes of ‘Doctor Who’.

Alongside ninth doctor Christopher Eccleston and assistant Rose (Billie Piper), she starred in the infamous episode ‘The Empty Child’.
Are you my mummy? No, but I’m literally still shook from this episode
The episode was the first instalment of a two part story that aired to much critical acclaim, bagging the 2006 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.
