With Halloween just days away, what better time to indulge in some spooky nostalgia? Be warned: if you’re a nineties kid, there’s a strong chance this movie was a large and incredibly frightening part of your childhood.
I’m serious. I’ve considered setting up a no-win-no-fee legal firm, dedicated solely to representing people that were emotionally scarred by the 1990 movie adaptation of ‘The Witches’. Did this film sh*t you up as a kid? Were you scarred for life by watching Anjelica Huston pull her entire face off? Then you could be entitled to compensation!
But if you, as the Black Eyed Peas posited in 2006, are “addicted to the drama, only attracted to things that’ll bring you trauma” and you fancy reliving the terror, here are some things you might not have known about this fright fest…
I guess it’ll be refreshing to have the nightmares about that little girl getting stuck in the painting again, and get a break from the regular ones about the potential economic fallout from Brexit and Donald Trump’s hair.
Blast from the Past
The first thing you might not know about this movie is just how old it is. I mean it’s really, really old. Maybe it just feels like yesterday because we’re all still shook.
1. Strike a pose
The week of the premiere, Madge was striking a pose and moving her body to the music with ‘Vogue’ at the top of the UK chart.

Some nineties chart staples were still years away- there were no Backstreet Boys until 1993, and the nation wouldn’t be persuaded to spice up its life for another four years.
2. From one famous Madge, to another
Madonna wasn’t the only iconic woman still in the cultural spotlight when ‘The Witches’ was released.

Leftie conspiracy theorists, time to dust off your tinfoil hats: Thatcher’s resignation coincided with the release of this spotter’s guide to modern day witches. Coincidence? I couldn’t possibly comment.
3. Officially the olden days
‘The Witches’ premiered to an offline world: when it came out, there was literally no internet. Tim Burness Lee wouldn’t launch the world wide web until the Autumn of 1990, meaning terrified viewers couldn’t even take to a Reddit thread for comfort.
