Special effects
With every film, even with one as supposedly simple as this, there needs to be some special effects.
19. Earthquake!
The 1993 film changed the way that Mary’s parents died. In the book they died from cholera.

However, in the 1993 film they died from an earthquake, possibly to add more dramatic effect!
20. Nightmare
How do you go about filming a child (Mary) in an earthquake? It wouldn’t be advisable to film in a real one!

They used a set that could be tilted around whilst production crew threw dirt, debris and even cockroaches at Maberly! Acting isn’t all glamour!
21. Fake garden
They not only didn’t use a real garden, but they also used computer generated graphics! No wonder it looked too good to be true.
