Casting Maggie Smith as Mrs Medlock, Lord Craven’s servant, was apparently for a bigger reason than “she’s good at acting”. Although she definitely is good!

She was seemingly cast as the “big name” to draw in audiences, as the children in the main roles were unknown.
14. The Godfather
The Secret Garden was backed by a production company owned by Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas.

With the support of people responsible for The Godfather, Star Wars and Indiana Jones, it’s no surprise the film was a success!
15. Girl power
It is also notable that the film was produced by Agnieszka Holland and the screenplay written by Caroline Thompson. Two women leading the way!
