Not a new story

The Secret Garden has been adapted on screen from very soon after the book was published! It obvious straight away it would be a hit with audiences.

The Secret Garden was first made into a silent film in 1919 by the American company, Famous Players-Lasky Corporation.

Sadly if you were wanting to give this version a look, the film footage is believed to be lost.

47. 30 years later…

In 1949 a US film was made again of The Secret Garden, with Margaret O’Brien as Mary.

It was filmed in black and white, except for the scenes of the restored garden which were in colour.

48. Not a hit

Unlike the 1993 version however, the 1949 film was not a hit with audiences and drew a loss at the box office.
