5. An unscripted bump to the head – or not?
There are two sides to this story. But it’s best first to lay the context…
Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf
During Gandalf’s initial visit to Bag End, he is seen to bump his head against Bilbo’s low hobbit-sized roof.

In the DVD commentary, Peter Jackson states that this was completely unscripted, but that McKellen continued to act admirably.
Bonk!
However, this has since been considered to be a simple misunderstanding. In a correspondence that appears online, McKellen denies this:

“Peter, for once, is wrong. The head-banging was my idea but I’m glad if it seemed spontaneous, the aim of all actors.”
McKellen says it was his idea!
But even if it was McKellen’s idea, it probably wasn’t initially scripted. It’s still an interesting look into the filming process, huh?
