26. Pranks
Ahh, everybody loves a good prank. And a good few pranks happened both on and off set for these films.
Bernard Hill somehow kept a straight face!
One of the more famous pranks included Viggo Mortensen changing all his lines in a serious scene with Bernard Hill (King Théoden). Instead of following the script, Viggo (as Aragorn) says,
“They will take you into a dark room, my Lord, and scan your very skull. They will make toys of your Lordship, ten thousand at least, for children to play stupid games with.”

Hah! Bernard Hill looks very confused in the footage. Not only that, but John Rhys-Davies played a prank on Peter Jackson.
Not real, we promise…
John had previously lost the end of his finger in an accident as a child. But to shock Peter, he had the makeup department do a false finger and then cut it open and covered it in fake blood.

Peter was convinced it was real and immediately wanted to get John to the hospital!
The best prank interview ever!
Another prank that was absolutely hilarious happened during the press coverage for The Return of the King. Dominic Monaghan (Merry) put on an accent and pretended to interview an unaware Elijah Wood with ridiculous questions. You can check it out for yourself here.
