25. Boat problems
The Lord of the Rings had several boat scenes. Of course this involved significant training on behalf of the actors.
Bye, Sean Bean!
Before filming, many of the actors underwent a strict training regime – not only in fighting, but also in boat steering.

Despite this fact, not all went to plan. The boat that Orlando Bloom and Brett Beattie (the Gimli scale double) were in capsized.
C’mon, Legolas…
This was very problematic for Brett, who was dressed in full armour as Gimli. Orlando explains in the DVD commentary that a crew member stopped their boat from going downstream, but it then filled up with water. Yikes!

Similarly, Viggo was sat in his boat with the scale double for Frodo, Kiran Shah, when Kiran informed Viggo that he couldn’t actually swim.
C’mon, Aragorn…
Viggo admits in the DVD commentary to being absolutely terrified after he found this out. He made absolutely sure to keep the boat steady.
