16. Sean Astin cut his foot open
Sean Astin, who played the much-loved hobbit, Samwise Gamgee, also scored an injury during the filming process.
Sam – the ultimate friend
If you cast your mind back to the end of the first film, you’ll recall the moment where Samwise realizes that Frodo is planning to leave the Fellowship and journey on his own.

Samwise charges after his friend into the water, desperate to go with him. During the filming of this scene, Astin himself had to run into the water.
He was never going to abandon Frodo
But as he did so, he stopped abruptly in pain. It turned out that he’d impaled his foot on a rogue piece of glass.

The crew helped him out and took the hobbit foot prosthetic off to get a better look.
Hobbit feet – not quite as resilient as they’d hoped!
When they looked, the found out that Astin had a huge gash on his foot. He was quickly air-lifted to the nearest hospital, where he had to have a number of stitches. It must have been quite a whopper!
