16. The actors got gifts from the set
The classic question that all actors are asked by interviewers: “Did you get to take anything away from set?”
“The ring is mine!” – Frodo, nooo!
In the case of The Lord of the Rings, the answer is a resounding YES! Many of the cast members took home mementos – often connected to their character or personal journey.

Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) were each gifted a prop, the One Ring. They were each told that theirs was the only one… (sneaky!)

Miranda Otto took away one of Éowyn’s dresses, and the sword she used to fight the Witch King.

Liv Tyler was gifted Arwen’s ‘dying dress’, and Orlando Bloom took home Legolas’ famous bow.

Sir Ian McKellen has been very open about the souvenirs he took away from the Lord of the Rings: Gandalf’s pointy hat, his wooden staff and his sword, Glamdring. These were of course gifted to him by Peter Jackson. But he even stole quite a few extras from the Lord of the Rings set, and also from The Hobbit afterwards.
