11. Bearded women
It’s hard to film a battle – not least because so many extras are required to make it believable!
The riders of Rohan
This was a problem that was faced in the filming of The Lord of the Rings.

We all remember gasping in awe at the charges made by the Rohirrim against the various Orc forces.
Many of them were actually women
Some of those riders were indeed CGI – but most were real people on real horses.

And since there were so many excellent women riders in New Zealand (where the films were filmed), it made sense to use them!
A surprise for all
So they were sat in makeup chairs, and made to look like men by using beards and other additions! Many people involved recall sitting down to breakfast, and filming alongside the Rohan ‘men’, only to find out that they were in fact women. Only on a film set, eh?
