7. Boot camp training
All actors typically undergo some form of training for a physically active role. Playing soldiers, the actors in Saving Private Ryan were bound to be aware of this.
Boot camp
However, what they weren’t aware of was that the boot camp would go on for several days, and that the training would be seriously grueling.

Tom Hanks was the exception because he had trained with the technical adviser, Dale Dye, for his Vietnam scenes in Forrest Gump (1994).
Run, Forrest, Run!
To make things even more interesting, Spielberg decided that Damon wouldn’t be doing the boot camp with his cast mates. Eh up, special treatment?

This was apparently to simulate the feelings of resentment that the actors’ characters were supposed to be feeling against Damon’s character, Private Ryan.
Brutal…
Well that’s definitely one way to do it… We’ll never know for sure if this is what actually happened, or if Damon just decided that he didn’t want to do the boot camp…
