A film with a lower age rating, for example, attracts a whole other crowd of viewers. But Saving Private Ryan was in danger of being rated an 18. This may have been detrimental to the film’s success.
Spielberg stuck to his guns
Despite this, Spielberg stuck to his guns and said that even if it was rated 18 (which we now it wasn’t), he was determined to leave the film unchanged. He wanted it to be as real as possible to the actual events. It was rated R (meaning adult supervision was required for young people), but this wasn’t a shock. Good on you, Spielberg!
