It becomes a bit of a joke throughout the movie that Captain Miller’s own unit don’t know what he did before the war.

It’s a shocking revelation giving his aptitude for command, and he eventually tells his unit to bring them all back to earth following a major death.
Miller also suffered with a tremor, thought to be caused by PTSD
But in the original script, Miller’s confession was a whole lot longer than it appears in the film. Tom Hanks, who played Miller, argued that he didn’t think that the long speech matched the character. Spielberg agreed, and it was made shorter. Go Tom – always knew that guy was talented…
