Spielberg and his father
Just as the screenwriter was inspired to write Saving Private Ryan after seeing a monument, Spielberg was inspired to direct.

The inspiration came from his own father – Arnold Spielberg – who served in the U.S. Army.
He served in World War II
Spielberg’s father was in Burma during World War II as a radio operator. He also helped Spielberg direct his first ever movie.

Turns out Spielberg’s first two movies both involved plots that took place during World War II.

They aren’t especially well-known – Spielberg directed both with his friends. But it just goes to show that even the biggest name in cinema started off small, fuelled by the inspiration from his father.
