25. The script changed… a few times
Before the script was accepted, it went through over 10 revisions from the original draft. (Wow)
Mellish and Caparzo
From the previous versions, the bits that were different include: 1. Mellish and Caparzo didn’t exist as characters initially. Wouldn’t that have made for a different film?

2. Captain Miller’s character was a lot more one-dimensional. Apparently, adding his backstory as a teacher was an after-thought.
Captain Miller didn’t have a proper backstory
3. The German Upham saves – Steamboat Willie – didn’t actually exist at all in the initial script.

4. Upham was killed off during the final battle originally. Spielberg decided to change this to convey the corrupting influence of war on even the most optimistic of minds.
Upham was killed off
5. Captain Miller survived the final battle and told Ryan about the men who died trying to rescue him. Now that would have been a very different ending.
