22. The bond of brotherhood
Upham is the soldier known for his optimism. When he sees the horrors committed by both Germans and Americans, he can hardly believe it.
Upham was an optimist before venturing deeper into the war
Throughout the course of the film, we see an Upham who is becoming increasingly disillusioned.

But nearer to the start of the film, Upham is seen to be reading a book about “the bond of brotherhood that develops between soldiers during war.”

He is laughed down by the unit, who state that the message behind the book is complete rubbish.

However, Tom Hanks and Spielberg would later both go on to be involved in the seriesĀ Band of Brothers.
Both were involved as executive producers
The series is based on a book of the same name, based around the misery experienced by soldiers during World War II. What goes around, comes around…
