12. Amputee extras
We all remember that horrific moment during the Omaha Beach scene where one of the soldiers gets his arm blown off, and goes to fetch it before carrying on.
The Omaha scene is horrific to watch
It’s horrific – it makes us clench our fists and grind our teeth. And it has us all wondering how it was filmed!

Well, wonder no more: Spielberg actually hired several amputees to feature as the film’s extras.
The scene used around 2,500 extras
In that way, Spielberg was able to film what looked like real limbs being blown off.

And although it looks incredibly real, rest easy that it’s all just smokes and mirrors.
So real it’s terrfiying
So now there’s no mystery: the amputees were, in fact, real amputees! Makes practical sense, really…
