11. An ultimatum
Actor Tom Sizemore was hired by Spielberg to play the role of Technical Sergeant Michael Horvath.
Actor Tom Sizemore was fighting drug addiction
Horvath is shown throughout the film a staunch friend of Captain Miller, and fiercely loyal to the unit’s mission.

This doesn’t stop him from ultimately being shot and killed during the final battle, however.
He was given an ultimatum
During the film’s production, Sizemore was known to be battling his drug addiction. Spielberg offered him an alternative:

Either go cold turkey and refuse any drugs, or forfeit the role to another actor. Spielberg even asked that Sizemore be tested before he came onto set everyday.
Unfortunately he relapsed after the film
Sizemore passed all of the drug tests and made the film. Unfortunately, he relapsed following the film’s release.
