7. New Orleans used to be full of creepy characters that influenced the show
New Orleans is often known as the most haunted city in the United States, so its no surprise that Murphy and Falchuk researched its tormented past for the making of season 3, Coven.

Kathy Bates’s character Delphine LaLaurie, was a wealthy plantation owner and New Orleans socialite in the 19th Century who became infamous for brutally torturing and murdering many of her slaves.

Marie Laveau, played by Angela Bassett, was a Louisiana voodoo practitioner and was later coined the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. Laveau has lived on in Louisiana folklore to this day and was resurrected superbly by Bassett in Coven.

Perhaps the most gruesome of these New Orleans legends is ‘The Axeman’, portrayed on screen by Danny Huston. Not the most imaginative name, ‘The Axeman’ got his title from murdering his victims with, you guessed it, an axe.

‘The Axeman of New Orleans’ was never found, but his legacy lives on, like Laveau’s and LaLaurie’s, through the horrors of Coven.
