When she landed the role of Florence on The Jeffersons Marla Gibbs was working as a reservation agent at United Airlines for 11 years and acted in her spare time.

Florence was only meant to be a one-off character, however, Gibbs received a lot of positive feedback from the audience that she was called back again a few episodes later.

She famously said: “Not unless you plan to pay me for it.” As a result, she was soon given a full contract and she finally bid farewell to United.
