7. Diagnosis By Audience Member

Paul Benedict played the Jeffersons’ neighbour, Harry Bentley. Who could forget that face…

He was noted for his unusual features, which included his oversized nose, jaw and disproportionately large hands and feet.

These features soon started to grow in high school while he was also suffering from excruciating headaches.

Heartbreaking…

Unfortunately for Benedict, no doctor had been able to pin down a cause for this until 1964, when he was co-starring in a play in Boston.

One of the theatre’s usher brought him a note from an audience member asking him to meet with him in the lobby. The audience member was a radiologist and explained to Benedict that he was displaying symptoms of acromegaly.

Thankfully Benedict got the help he needed and after a 20-minute surgical procedure stopped the condition before it caused further damage.
