This was done by Dr. Harold Gillies when he discovered how to prevent the body from rejecting skin grafts by boosting the blood supply to the surrounding tissue by using a tube of flesh that he called a pedicle. The first patient to do this procedure was a naval gunner named Walter Yeo who was wounded in 1916.
Massive ear trumpets used to hear incoming planes.

This was before radar was invented and so people used these to try and listen for incoming air raids. It was like a giant hearing aid which fed sound to the listener through two long trumpet devices.
