In fact, it was the most significant non-nuclear blast in history, and it happened when 19 highly explosive mines were placed in tunnels under the German army at La Boiselle near Messines in France. When it blew up, it was so loud that it was heard in Dublin and London and created a mushroom cloud 4,000 feet high which killed 10,000 German soldiers.
