Maddy Hill played EastEnders’ character Nancy Carter from 2014 – 2018. She might be an East End girl but she’s definitely one of the lads, working behind the bar in the Queen Vic with the rest of the Carter family.

The daughter of Mick Carter and Linda Carter (Danny Dyer and Kellie Bright), Nancy’s first big storyline in Albert Square involved her family forcibly taking her from her own wedding as they disapproved of her fiancé.

When It Comes To Her Love Life

In terms of romance, Nancy had relationships with Wayne Ladlow and Dexter Hartman, but ultimately ended up leaving the square with Tamwar Masood (Himesh Patel) to see the world.

More importantly, many of her storylines involved her struggle with epilepsy, something that Maddy was often praised for portraying and raising awareness of!

During her time playing Nancy, Maddy scooped up several acting awards which included ‘Best Newcomers’ at the British Soap Awards, as well as the same award at the National Television Awards (NTA’s).

With her tomboy style left behind, Maddy looked seriously glam, opting for a retro look.

She’s Been Stage Too

Leaving the soap after four years, Maddy tried her hand at stage acting, playing the titular character Imogen at the Globe Theatre. The play, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, was highly reviewed, receiving 5 stars from the Radio Times.

The reimagining was set in a streets of modern London, exploring the issues of drugs, gangs, money and territory.

Speaking of how she felt to leave Eastenders behind, she said:

“I was really ready to go and do loads of theatre. I felt like I had a lot of pent-up live performance in me and I found it really fun getting back on stage.”

She’s Also Been On TV Shows

Maddy also took part in a celebrity version of The Great Sport Relief Bake Off.

She explained:

“I learnt everything I know from Danny Dyer who plays my screen dad, Mick. He’s brilliant in the kitchen – not! Seriously, I have no culinary skills.

“All my EastEnders mates were like, ‘What? You’ve agreed? You can’t bake!’ Everyone thought I was mad which was even more reason to do it.”

In 2018, Maddy joined the cast of Casualty as paramedic Ruby Spark. She divulged:

“It’s nice because the cast is quite small so everyone is very, very warm and welcoming.

“They are a just a really down-to-earth, tight-knit group of people, who have been absolutely lovely.”

Outside of her day jobs, Maddy takes an avid interest in Politics, urging young people to register to vote and ensure that their voices are heard.

Maddy’s Got An Interest In Politics

In the 2017 General Election, Maddy worked in particular with the Labour Party as she introduced the party leader Jeremy Corbyn at a packed rally in Birmingham.

She said:

“Millions of people in this country are not registered to vote, and if you lose your vote you lose your voice,

“You lose your chance to have a say in things. Your chance to build the kind of society we all want to live in.

 “It’s really quick and easy, it literally takes three minutes online. That’s three minutes to have a say in a decision which will last five years and that could change the face of our country.”

She Does Her Bit For Charity

Maddy also has a serious commitment to charity work.

In 2016, Maddy became the first official ambassador for Rape Crisis England and Wales, following her performance for a rape plot in Eastenders.

She explained:

“I spoke to my friend’s sister who works for them and she said that celebrities – or their agents – had been unwilling to be heads of them because it was considered a dirty charity. She actually used that word and I was gobsmacked.”

“It’s shocking how little we hear or talk about sexual abuse and rape and it’s unjust how little support this truly amazing charity gets.”

Since then, Maddy has continued her involvement in various charities including, Epilepsy Awareness, Action Aid, Plan (ending child marriage) and Macmillan Cancer.

She’s Not Ruling Out An Eastenders Return

Most recently, Maddy announced on her Instagram that she would be involved in the short film Cower.

For all those Nancy fans out there, you’ll be pleased to hear that Maddy is not ruling out a return to Albert Square by any means.

When asked whether she could be tempted back to Eastenders, Maddy claimed:

 “Totally. I have always said that I’d never say no.

“I loved everyone I worked with and Danny and Kellie are still there. Would definitely have an open mind about it – definitely.”

Despite this, Maddy feels it was the right time for her to leave as she wanted to pursue other options.
