We have all grown up watching different soaps. Whether it’s EastEnders, Coronation Street or Emmerdale – they all have a special place in our hearts. There’s no better feeling than sitting down to watch telly on a week night and catching up with all the latest gossip that’s happened. I don’t think we will ever get bored of the storylines! Isn’t it annoying when you see spoilers all over Twitter or Facebook?!

We all know that Coronation Street has to be one of the best soaps around, did you know that it is actually the longest standing soap in UK history? It came out in the 60s and has been widely recognised a classic ever since. I think we were all hooked when it was the 50 year anniversary of this soap and they had the tram crash. They even aired a full hour-long episode that was live?!

Just like any soap, characters come and they go! This is heartbreaking sometimes, especially if we loved the characters but half the drama wouldn’t happen if some of these characters weren’t killed off or left.
One of the most famous families on the Street is the Platt family. Their storylines are still going strong.. but what happened to Martin Platt – one of Gail’s many partners?

Well, we were first introduced to Martin back in 1985 when he left school and began working in Jim’s cafe. His first main storyline started when Brian Tilsley was murdered on the street. His involvement came when he began comforting Brian’s widowed wife, Gail. He definitely saw his chance with Gail and took it…

After comforting her in her time of need, the two quickly fell for each other. It wasn’t long after in 1990 that she discovered she was pregnant with Martin’s child. Her initial reaction was that she needed to have an abortion, but it was Martin that stopped her doing this which proved his commitment to her. Their son David was born on Christmas day that year and they moved in together to raise their child. Not only this, but he had committed to Gail’s children from a previous marriage aswell. This just proved how much of a good guy he was!

Just as you would expect with any soap, the storylines can never stay quiet. We wouldn’t be completely hooked on the soap otherwise! Soon after, Gail and Martin end up getting divorced, even though they still maintain a close relationship because of the kids. It isn’t long before this friendship gets tainted when he becomes the love interest of one of Gail’s best friends, Sally. They go behind Gail’s back for a short while before she found out.

After a continuous story of drama including more flings, someone trying to murder him and in turn, him actually being accused of murder, the producers decided that it was time for Martins character to leave the soap. It wasn’t a shock to us all, because he had graced out screens for a massive twenty years! He definitely had his time on the show and was easily one of our favourite characters.
His departure on screen showed him leaving with his current girlfriend Robyn when they both decided that they needed to move to Liverpool. After an emotional goodbye, Martin Platt left the soap.
So, what has the actor who played Martin Platt been up to since he left the show back in 2005?
Well, the role of Martin Platt was played by Sean Wilson. Since leaving the show he has continued his acting career and had numerous different roles in a range of different television shows! We have seen him on the odd episodes of Waterloo Road, Casualty and Doctors.
Back in 2006 he was a contestant on Dancing On Ice, which also happened to be the first series of that show! However, he didn’t make it too far and was the fifth person to be eliminated.

In 2008 he appeared in Cinderella at the Palace Theatre in Redditch. However, from this he then decided to take a leave from acting so since 2009 hasn’t had any significant roles in anything.

Instead of acting, he has now become a chef and has actually cooked in a range of different Michelin starred restaurants. Not only this, but he is a renowned cheese maker and actually now owns his own cheese company ‘Saddleworth Cheese Company’. His passion for cooking was taken to the next step when he published his own cook book in 2012, ‘The Great Northern Cookbook’.

Alongside cooking, he is also a patron of the charity ‘Development of Children and Women Centre Nepal’ which is a charity founded in the UK.
